Your transmitter is not working.

That is the call we take, and it is ordinary work here. Bridges Industrial is a hands-on instrumentation firm in League City, Texas, working on site across the Gulf Coast. Sixteen years with hands on the devices: flow, level, temperature, pressure, and analytical measurement.

A dead loop, a reading that drifts, a device replaced twice that still lies to you. None of it is too small to bring, and the first answer costs nothing.

You do not need to know the cause to ask. Describing the symptom is enough, and the symptom is usually the most useful thing you can give us anyway.

Most measurement problems turn out not to be instrument failures. They are a process meeting an instrument that was never matched to it, or a device installed, ranged, or configured in a way the application does not tolerate. Replacing it reproduces the same problem with a newer serial number.

Dead loop. No signal at the controller, or the loop sits at a fault current like 3.6 mA or above 21 mA.
Pegged. Reads full scale, or zero, or a fixed value that never moves.
Reads empty when the tank is full. Or full when it is empty, or right until the level gets low.
Drifts. Climbs through the day, or walks off over weeks, with nothing changed.
Will not hold calibration. Calibrated last month, out again already.
Replaced twice, same problem. A device dying repeatedly is a symptom of something else.
Erratic or spiky. Jumping around with no process upset, or noise when a big motor starts.
Fine on the bench, wrong in the process. Passes every check on a bench and still misreads installed.
Came back from the lab in tolerance. The certificate is right and your operator is right. A bench reproduces the device, not the process that was fooling it.
The vendor says their device tests good. They are probably right, and your reading is still wrong. That is where this work starts.
Will not communicate. A HART communicator that cannot find the device, or drops the connection.
Two readings disagree. A level transmitter against a sight glass, a flow meter against a tank draw-down.
Only at certain times. Alarms on night shift, at startup, after a wash, at low flow, on cold mornings.
Slow. Takes far too long to catch up with a real process change.
pH that will not behave. Fails buffer, drifts between cleanings, or reads nothing like the lab.

Both are in scope, and the routine jobs are the day job. One transmitter reading wrong is a normal call. So is a plant full of them. The difficult diagnostics further down are work we are also good at, not a bar you have to clear before asking.

When someone else is the better call

  • You need an accredited certificate or a traceable chain. We do documented field calibration with as-found and as-left values, but we are not an accredited laboratory and do not issue traceable certificates. If your procedure requires either, use an accredited laboratory.
  • You want to ship the device out. This is on-site work, not a bench repair depot. For depot repair or warranty work, go to the manufacturer or a bench service house.
  • The unit is down and you need someone today. There is no staffed dispatch desk here and no 24/7 line. If it is an emergency, call a larger field service contractor.
  • You need a crew for a turnaround. This is a small operation, not a staffing house.
  • You need electrical contracting. We work on instruments and loops, not as an electrical contractor.
  • You need SIL verification or LOPA. Functional safety calculations carry their own certifications and liability. We work on the instrument side of a safety loop, not the numbers behind it.
  • You need fixed gas detection serviced. That is its own discipline, with its own calibration gases and compliance records. Use a gas detection service house.
  • You need P&IDs drawn or sealed. Drawing development usually needs an engineer of record, which we are not.
