Eyes are not the tool

A modern fake can look perfect. Guessing by eye is a coin flip, and the makers of fakes are counting on it. So we do not guess. We check where the image came from. That is called .

You will not spot it by staring. Real investigators never trust the look of an image. They trust what they can trace about it. You are about to learn the same three checks they use.

Run the checks

Pick an image, then run every check. Each one gives you a signal: leans trust, leans doubt, or unclear. No single check decides it, so gather them all.

Stack the signals

No one check is proof on its own. A real original can still be reused in a lie, and a missing label does not mean fake. Investigators do what you just did: gather several signals and weigh them together.

🔎 The three checks, for any image

1. Reverse image search. Does it show up earlier somewhere else, or in a totally different story? Then this caption is not the real one.
2. Content Credentials (). A tamper-evident label some cameras and AI tools now attach, showing if an image was AI-made or edited. If it is there, read it.
3. Source that has to get it right. Did it come from a place that is accountable, or from an account built for clicks?

The rule: one signal is a hint, several together are an answer. Check the source, not the surface. And when the checks disagree, stay in doubt until they do not.
